Jara is a friendly, experienced tutor who specialises in teaching Spanish and English as a Second Language.
Spanish (Secondary, GCSE, A-level, Degree)
English as a Second Language (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)
Sociology (GCSE, A-level, Degree)
Philosophy (AS/A2, Degree)
I have 6 years of experience as a private tutor, dividing my time between Barcelona and London. My experience is concentrated on teaching Spanish and English as a second language.
Additionally, I taught English at a secondary school in Barcelona full-time from September 2013 - 2014. I have several years of experience as a professional translator, translating from English to Spanish in various subject matters. I am currently a professional reader for a publishing company based in Barcelona.
Throughout my academic career I have gained a variety of scholarships, including the Beca De Posgrado Caja Madrid, which is the most prestigious postgraduate scholarship awarded in Spain. Additionally, I was awarded a substantial scholarship from London School of Economics for my MSc, and was awarded the Beca De Posgrado Sa Nostra for my MA at Birkbeck.
I have a well structured approach which aims to uncover the student's weaknesses within the first few sessions. For example, underlying confusion about verb tenses often needs to be resolved before we can address more advanced issues. After the initial assessment, I devise a comprehensive improvement scheme, which includes continual assessment of the student's progression.
Additionally I am friendly and patient, and am careful to tailor lessons to my student's interests to keep them motivated and engaged.
Aletta is an energetic and enthusiastic tutor who impressed at interview with her friendly and encouraging teaching style.
English: 7+, 10+, 11+, GCSE and A-level
Maths: 7+, 10+, 11+, GCSE
Media Studies: A-level
After graduating with honours from the Research Master’s Media Studies (With Honours, 2013) I gained work experience as a lecturer in Film Studies, Philosophy of Science and Academic Writing at the University of Amsterdam. Alongside my work for the university I worked as a tutor, helping undergraduates reach their academic potential.
I have ten years of experience working with a wide range of students, including students with learning difficulties like dyslexia, ADHD and autism. Furthermore, having previously worked as an academic and motivational trainer for GCSE students, I bring a lot of knowledge and enthusiasm to the table.
I am an enthusiastic tutor with a great skill for helping students to prepare for exams and deadlines in a fun and efficient way. I design results-based lessons that focus on boosting confidence and balancing academic progress with learning enjoyment. Central to my lessons are assignments that demand active engagement with a subject and help students grow into confident learners. The aim of a lesson is hence always twofold: by studying a certain subject in preparation of an exam, the student also acquires study skills that will prove useful in further education.
"Aletta has been a great support to our son in his preparation for the City of London admissions test (11+). After weekly tutor sessions, he scored excellently in his test."
"Aletta is currently tutoring 2 young primary students through our tutoring agency. One is a young boy who has ADHD, and one who is a young girl. Both students are preparing for 11+ exams in the future. I believe both students are expecting to and hoping to obtain placements to leading independent schools in London. Both parents have been delighted with Aletta's work so far. She is covering Maths, English, verbal and non verbal reasoning with them.
In our experience, Aletta has been a pleasure to work with - very professional, accommodating and patient."
"Our son is really happy and really enjoys his lessons with Aletta - he'd prefer to have lessons every day!" (Mother of 10+ student)

I have also supported several students with their 11+ and GCSE exams, focusing on English.
Cambridge-born Alex is a tutor based in London. His specialist subjects include Music and Drama, which he tutors to degree level. Alex is also able to provide assistance with preparing for drama school and conservatoire auditions and can offer lessons in Piano, Voice and Oboe. In addition, he teaches English and Science to GCSE level, and is comfortable with most 11+ Common Entrance subjects. He currently tutors a varied spread of students in various areas of study.

Alex approaches tuition with a lively, constructive and engaging energy. He aims to tailor each tutorial to the specific needs of the individual, in order to assist the student in reaching their full potential.
‘I have no hesitation in recommending Alex. In fact, when Alex had to leave us to take up his acting position for The Railway Children, we had two other tutors but did not think much of them and begged Alex to come back and slot Frederick in whenever he could.’ – (June 2015)
Mark is an Oxbridge educated, experienced generalist tutor whose friendly and approachable manner makes students feel instantly at ease.
Maths (11+, 13+, 16+, GCSE)
English (11+, 13+, 16+, GCSE, AS/A2)
Biology, Physics and Chemistry (11+, 13+, 16+ GCSE)
Philosophy (AS/A2, Degree)
French (Secondary, GCSE)
I have been working as a private tutor for the past three years, teaching GCSE Maths, Chemistry and Physics as well as 11+ Maths preparation. I also have four years of experience working as a full-time teacher of A-level Philosophy, Sociology and Religious Studies at d'Overbroeck's Sixth Form College.
I am an enthusiastic and friendly tutor with a passion for learning. I studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Oxford University and subsequently completed an MSc in the History and Philosophy of Science at the London School of Economics. I am fascinated by the natural world and by scientific enquiry. When I'm not teaching or learning I enjoy foreign cinema, playing tennis, and strumming the guitar.
Once I understand exactly what a tutee hopes to achieve, (e.g. A* Maths GCSE, or simply understanding algebra) I have three main priorities as a tutor:
i) to identify a student's strengths and weaknesses through short tests
ii) to provide a course of study and assessment that will focus on the weaknesses and monitor progress
iii) to give the student belief in themselves and their abilities and to instil a love of learning
Anna is a special needs education specialist who impressed us at interview with her engaging and sympathetic teaching style. She is passionate about literature and keen to help all students develop a love for English.
English (11+, 13+, 16+, GCSE, AS/A2, undergraduate level)
English as a Second Language (beginner, intermediate, advanced)
Study support (ages 7 - 18, especially for children with SEN)
I currently work full-time in a learning difficulties department at a college. Our students have a variety of special needs, including autism, dyspraxia, dyslexia, Down's syndrome and cerebral palsy. The majority of my time is spent working one-on-one with students, supporting them with English, Maths, life skills and socialisation. Previously, I spent three years teaching English as a Second Language at secondary school level. I was primarily based in a highly competitive English intensive school, Nishi Senior High, in Japan.
After finishing my degree, I moved to Japan to jump-start my teaching career and learn about a fascinating new culture. I taught English for three years, and subsequently decided to focus on children with special educational needs and moved back to the UK to accept a full time position at Westminster Kingsway College. I plan to pursue a degree in clinical psychology, specialising in children with autism.
I consider the most important element of tuition to be its interactive and communicative nature. My lessons are always extremely question-based, and I seek to guide the student towards unpicking a text for themselves rather than delivering a lecture.
I strongly believe in every child's right to education and am passionate about teaching individuals with special needs such as dyspraxia, dyslexia or autism. While tutoring I can draw on my wealth of experience with SEN to tailor each lesson to suit individual learning styles and needs.

I have been working as a private tutor for over 7 years and have well over 3000 hours of tutoring experience. I am especially accomplished in helping students prepare for 11+, 13+ and 16+ entrance exams since this type of tutoring is in high demand in London.
I used to work as a research physicist at Cambridge University. I have always have had a dual interest in the arts and sciences. I’ve written a novel and several full length plays and got into directing student plays and films at Cambridge. I now co-run a small production company making music videos and adverts and our first feature film is in production.
I am passionate about the subjects I tutor in and education in general. Knowledge is liberating and my subjects especially open many doors. They are not easy and require a willingness to work hard, but I strongly believe that anyone can get to grips with them if given the correct guidance. Most often the problem is not the student but a poor teacher, unresolved conceptual difficulties or lack of motivation. I want to fix these issues for you.

I'm an experienced tutor and believe learning should be enjoyable as well as challenging and interesting. Building a student's confidence, listening to them and meeting their needs is key to learning and progress. I agree an individual learning plan to meet the needs of each learner and review this regularly to ensure they are making good progress. I am recognised as a positive, highly skilled professional.
“Gerry's teaching was excellent. He stepped in at a critical time for us to help our son prepare for the 11+ entrance exams. He very quickly got to know our son, his strengths, interests and areas for development. He tailored the lessons accordingly, motivated our son and drew parallels for our son between his effort in English and his effort on the football field. Gerry was always well prepared and was flexible, adapting his lessons to our son’s needs and our requests. We would recommend Gerry without hesitation and in fact Gerry will begin teaching our daughter very shortly.”
-- Parents of 11+ pupil. This student received offers from the schools he applied to including Alleyn’s, UCS and Forest. (January 2018)
"I am very grateful for all you have done for me on this journey we have had together. Although I have never said it to you verbally, I want to say that I appreciated every bit of our lessons.
Thank you for helping me to achieve results in English which I had previously not thought possible. Thank you for believing in me and I will never hesitate to reach out to you again and/or to recommend your services to any person wanting them.
I wish you the best and I do hope we can talk again in the future.
Thank you for everything."
-- IGCSE Student. Now at his first choice school in the U.K. (Summer 2018)
"Our son’s IGCSE results came out a couple of hours ago and he obtained an A grade both in English Language and English Literature. We are all over the moon about it and wanted to share our happiness and gratitude with you as soon as possible. Thank you for your untiring efforts and time as well as diligence without which none of this would have been possible.
His overall results were very good. While I’m ecstatic about all the other grades, the ones that have pleasantly surprised me the most are his English ones as we both know he had quite some distance to cover in order to get a good grade. All kudos to you and your guidance .
Our sincerest and most heart felt thanks to you and our prayers for you and your family."
-- Parent Of IGCSE student (Summer 2018)
"Gerry, I've never had a tutor who has made me feel so comfortable. Under your guidance my confidence has grown and my learning has come on leaps and bounds. Thank you!"
-- A-level English student
"As an overseas parent, we have constantly struggled to find a good tutor who could spark my son’s interest in the language. Luckily, another tutor recommended Gerry to us. We appreciated the fact that he took the trouble to establish what our needs were, the child’s learning style and our aims.
We have been very pleased with the work and pace he had achieved with our son. His confidence has been boosted and he has found enjoyment in the learning. Gerry has a wonderful way of putting the child at ease and communicating in an extremely encouraging manner. As parents, we admire his patience and enthusiasm. We would highly recommend Gerry to any parent for preparing for 11+, 13+, GCSE or beyond.
In my son’s words: “ Gerry is kind, organised, fun and fantastic!”
-- Parent of 11+ pupil now in the U.K. at their first choice school (January 2018)

-- Merouane, French engineering student.
"I studied French at A level with Gerry as my tutor, and I definitely couldn't have achieved my B without him. His teaching style is immersive - he has so much experience with languages, it's like you're talking and learning with a native speaker! In my time at sixth form he went above and beyond to ensure that me and my classmates got the most out of his lessons and achieved our best in examinations. A friendly and thorough tutor, and one of the most travelled and generous people I have ever met. Gerry is the perfect tutor if you want to understand a language."

I also take on undergraduates and mature students on foundation courses. I offer group sessions and outings to London museums, such as a trip to the Natural History Museum to see the Whales exhibition as a touchstone for natural selection and evolution.

5 A in iGCSE Triple Science
2 homeschooled students sitting iGCSE
Group sessions for all years of BSc Biology at University of Sussex
4 individual students mentored at BSc Biology at University of Sussex
5 GCSE Maths
1 entrance exam for 11+ Maths
I also have lecturing experience running a comics and cartooning masterclass, was a student mentor during my Biology degree at Sussex and regularly led group study sessions. I've worked with children and have professionally led workshops, chemistry parties and Lego building clubs for 4-11 year olds.
My approach is to first identify the specific areas that need work. I'll compose a lesson plan to be built around each area. For each lesson I use cartoons, humour and stories to encode information in a digestible form so that its principles can be better understood. I can then amplify this understanding with belt-and-braces memorisation by using a flashcard computer programme which I have come to find very useful. This is particularly effective for essay questions and exam preparation.
Individual sessions carry with them the luxury of tailoring a style that best fits the student. I am also skilled at keeping the interest of a group and can lead small classes.
Outside of classes I am happy to answer emailed questions and to mark small amounts of homework free of charge.
